Ant Farm Update #6: New residents
August 20th, 2008
In the time I’ve been tending to my ant farm, I’ve noticed that the queen often runs and hides under the leaf I inadvertently left there when transferring some captured ants. Obviously she quite likes it under there, so I thought I’d add a little more ground cover for her to roam around. And then I thought, she must be feeling lonely after this weekend’s tragedy, so I’ll go one better and add some new residents while I’m at it. And not residents that would attack her, like last time.
And so I introduce the new family and happy residents of Blue Gel City:

The queen was a little shy and didn’t want to come out and meet her new subjects just yet, so I left them alone in the cupboard where I’m sure a potluck or similar neighbourly activity will be held. How lovely.

Sadly none of the queen’s eggs hatched, I don’t know why not. I presume ants exhibit parthenogenesis, so I guess conditions weren’t suitable. Once the new queens start hatching out in early summer I’ll grab one and try again.
