Horizon’s “War On Science”
December 4th, 2006
If you have 45 minutes and a chunk of bandwidth to spare, you could do a lot worse than sit down for Horizon’s War on Science. Covering the birth and propagation of Intelligent Design, it includes interviews with such luminaries as Richard Dawkins, Michael Behe (who coined the term “irreducible complexity”), Sir David Attenborough, William Dembski and Stephen Meyer. All of whom present their cases with great articulation, clarity, charm and persuasion.
Some important questions are raised, such as “can a naturalistic worldview ever give us a complete picture of the universe?”, as well as the more pertinent “is ID science?”. Good stuff.

I always thought the most pertinent question was “can a non-naturalistic worldview ever give us a complete picture of the universe” - to which the answer is, by definition, no. If you rely on the assumption that some things (like the mind of a god or the existence of pixies) are unknowable then it’s not obvious what one should research. It may be futile. For most people that worldview collapses into the naturalistic one for their own specialism, which is lucky!

Oh yeah, and I think Horizon are the ones at the moment waging a war on science. Have you seen some of the dross they’ve broadcast lately?

On naturalism vs spiritualism - ha, yes, it’s a catch-22 situation. Naturalism assumes that everything must have some kind of substance, but the alternative, whilst allowing for spooky bearded cats in the sky, cripples our ability to search for it. It all leads to endless pondering that I’ve really no time for.
On the latest Horizon stuff - no, as I don’t own a TV! But I’ve heard there’s been a decline in the quality of their programming. This, however, is a good piece that avoids too much in the way of sensationalism, although “war” is a pretty far fetched term for what’s happening.
